Presented By The Office of The First Selectman and in Collaboration With:
Dads Make A Difference
The Fathers' Forum is back and better than ever!
Next Meeting Date is Saturday, May 13, 2017
8:00-9:30am at the Darien YMCA
Never a more important time than now for bringing dads together in fellowship and community to explore how we can be better at parenting and more knowledgeable about our roles in raising our kids.....
.....And we've assembled a truly first rate group of speakers for the coming year.
Our program consists of eight meetings scheduled generally on the Second Saturday of the month, between October 8 and May 13, 2017 at the Darien YMCA in a conference room that's adjacent to the front desk. Free of charge. Speakers will engage dads on pressing issues in parenting today and the distinct roles fathers play in shaping their sons' and daughters' lives. But, more than simply listening, they'll also participate in small breakout groups where men can explore the topics on a more personal level.
Some background: The Fathers' Forum was the brainchild of former First Selectman, Bob Harrel, who, in the late 1990's worked with Meghan Gorman and Moira Rizzo of Darien Youth Options to gather fathers in the cafeteria of the old high school. Meetings were 90 minutes, from 8:00-9:30 on Saturday mornings with speakers who addressed key issues facing dads at the time. As an attendee, I learned a great deal and enjoyed sharing discussions with other guys I knew who attended. The Fathers' Forum lasted five years, later picked up in Greenwich, Mamaroneck and other towns. Today, there are even Fathers' Forums on the west coast.
We owe thanks to many people in town who have offered their guidance. First Selectman, Jayme Stevenson, and Susan Marks threw their full support when we met earlier this summer. Ingrid Gillespie of Communities 4 Action was instrumental in supporting the Greenwich Fathers' Forum and provided us with her insights and speaker suggestions. Carrie Bernier and Emily Larkin of the Community Fund of Darien have offered great assistance and direction as well, and Emily is available to answer anyone's questions. Judy Phillips of YMCA Parent Awareness and Janice Marzano of the Darien Depot have introduced us to some of the terrific speakers, Margot Congdon and Sue Vogel of the Darien High School Parents Association have generously offered the DHSPA support, and Pat Morrissey and April Greene of YMCA have made its facility available to us on Saturday mornings.
We invite you to peruse our site, which details our program, bios on our speakers and fabulous resources you can reference if you need them.
We look forward to seeing you at our next event on Saturday, May 13 at 8am at the Darien YMCA!
